He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory under the tutelage of Tatiana Kravchenko and later with Maria Yudina, a prominent pianist and teacher. Ugorski's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and competitions, including the All-Union Piano Competition in Moscow in 1970. He made his debut as a soloist with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance marked the beginning of a successful career as a concert pianist. In the 1980s, Ugorski gained international recognition for his performances and recordings of the works of Arnold Schoenberg. He was one of the first pianists to record Schoenberg's complete piano works, which earned him critical acclaim and established him as a leading interpreter of the composer's music. Ugorski's repertoire also includes the works of other composers, such as Schubert, Beethoven, Brahms, and Debussy.
