Renaud Capuçon is a French classical violinist who has established himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation. Born on January 27, 1976, in Chambéry, France, Capuçon grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor and his mother was a pianist, and his older brother, Gautier Capuçon, is also a renowned cellist. Capuçon began playing the violin at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he was a student of Gérard Poulet. He also studied with Thomas Brandis at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. In 1997, Capuçon won first prize at the International Violin Competition in Tokyo, which launched his career as a soloist. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, and Valery Gergiev. Capuçon's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Baroque era to contemporary music. He has a particular affinity for the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and has recorded their complete violin concertos. He has also championed the music of contemporary composers, such as Pascal Dusapin and Bruno Mantovani. In addition to his solo career, Capuçon is a dedicated chamber musician. He is a founding member of the Capuçon Quartet, which he formed with his brother Gautier, violist Gérard Caussé, and cellist Michel Dalberto. The quartet has performed at major venues around the world and has recorded several albums, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets. Capuçon has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2005, he was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2011, he was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique for Instrumental Soloist of the Year. He has also been a recipient of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and the ECHO Klassik Award. Some of Capuçon's most memorable performances include his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003, where he performed Brahms' Violin Concerto under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. He also gave a highly acclaimed performance of the same concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2018, which was conducted by François-Xavier Roth. Another notable performance was his interpretation of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2016, which was conducted by Daniel Harding. Capuçon is also a committed educator and has taught masterclasses at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York. He is currently a professor at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne in Switzerland. In conclusion, Renaud Capuçon is a highly accomplished and versatile musician who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. His virtuosic playing, deep musicality, and commitment to both solo and chamber music have earned him a place among the most respected artists of his generation.
