The quartet was founded in 1985 by four talented musicians, all of whom were students at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. The founding members of the Dekany String Quartet were violinists Vilmos Szabadi and Zsolt Szefcsik, violist Gabor Homoki, and cellist Laszlo Mezo. The quartet was named after their mentor, renowned Hungarian violinist and pedagogue, Gyorgy Dekany. From the very beginning, the Dekany String Quartet was committed to excellence in performance and musicianship. They quickly gained recognition for their exceptional talent and were invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Musikverein in Vienna. Over the years, the quartet has undergone some changes in its lineup, but its commitment to excellence has remained unchanged. Today, the Dekany String Quartet consists of violinists Vilmos Szabadi and Zsolt Szefcsik, violist Gabor Homoki, and cellist Andras Fejer. The quartet has won numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1988, they won first prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. This was followed by a win at the International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux, France, in 1990. In addition to their competition wins, the Dekany String Quartet has also been recognized for their outstanding recordings. They have recorded the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Bartok, and Schubert, among others. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. The quartet has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the world, including pianist Andras Schiff, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and cellist Miklos Perenyi. They have performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Budapest Spring Festival. One of the highlights of the Dekany String Quartet's career was their performance of the complete Beethoven string quartets at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2007. This was a monumental undertaking, as the Beethoven string quartets are considered some of the most challenging and complex works in the classical music repertoire. The quartet's performance was met with critical acclaim, and they were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. Another notable performance by the Dekany String Quartet was their collaboration with the Hungarian National Ballet in 2011. The quartet performed the music for a new ballet production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, which was choreographed by renowned Hungarian choreographer, Youri Vamos. The production was a huge success, and the quartet's performance was praised for its sensitivity and musicality. Throughout their career, the Dekany String Quartet has remained committed to promoting classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world, and have mentored many young musicians who have gone on to successful careers in music. In conclusion, the Dekany String Quartet is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has captivated audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades.More....
