Elizabeth Layton was born on August 22, 1985, in London, England. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Layton showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Layton's early musical education was under the guidance of her mother, who taught her the basics of violin playing. She later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. During her time at the academy, Layton studied under the tutelage of renowned violinists such as György Pauk and Mateja Marinkovic. After completing her studies, Layton began her professional career as a soloist and chamber musician. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Layton's most notable performances was at the 2008 Proms, where she performed the violin concerto by Jean Sibelius with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Her performance was met with critical acclaim, with The Guardian describing it as "a stunning display of virtuosity and musicality." In addition to her solo performances, Layton is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Stephen Hough and cellist Steven Isserlis. Layton is a founding member of the Nash Ensemble, a chamber music group based in London that has been praised for its innovative programming and exceptional musicianship. Layton's talent has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize, which is awarded to the most outstanding student in the academy's string department. She was also a finalist in the 2006 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition, one of the most prestigious violin competitions in the world. In addition to her performing career, Layton is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and has given masterclasses around the world.
