California Parallèle Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in San Francisco, California. The ensemble was founded in 1993 by conductor and artistic director Nicole Paiement, with the aim of presenting contemporary classical music in a way that is accessible and engaging to audiences. Nicole Paiement is a highly respected conductor and music educator, with a particular focus on contemporary music. She has conducted numerous world premieres and has worked with many of the leading composers of our time. Paiement is also a professor of music at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she teaches conducting and contemporary music. The California Parallèle Ensemble is made up of a core group of musicians, many of whom have been with the ensemble since its founding. These include violinist Robin Sharp, cellist Emil Miland, and pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi. The ensemble also regularly collaborates with guest artists, including composers, soloists, and other ensembles. One of the highlights of the California Parallèle Ensemble's career was their 2008 production of John Adams' opera "Doctor Atomic." The production was a collaboration with the San Francisco Opera and was hailed as a major success. The ensemble also performed the West Coast premiere of Adams' "The Gospel According to the Other Mary" in 2013. In addition to their work with contemporary composers, the California Parallèle Ensemble also performs works from the classical canon. They have performed works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, among others. However, they often approach these works with a fresh perspective, incorporating contemporary elements and techniques into their performances. The California Parallèle Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2007, they were awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. They have also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Opera Recording for their production of "Doctor Atomic." Overall, the California Parallèle Ensemble is a highly respected and innovative ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of contemporary classical music.
