Areon Flutes is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing contemporary music for flute quartet. The ensemble was founded in 2004 by four flutists who shared a passion for exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of traditional flute music. Since then, Areon Flutes has become one of the most respected and innovative flute ensembles in the world. The founding members of Areon Flutes were Kassey Plaha, Jill Heinke, Sasha Launer, and Amelia Lukas. All four were accomplished flutists who had studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the United States, including the Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. They came together with the goal of creating a new kind of flute ensemble that would showcase the versatility and expressive potential of the flute. From the beginning, Areon Flutes focused on performing contemporary music that was written specifically for flute quartet. The ensemble commissioned new works from emerging composers and collaborated with established composers to create new pieces that would challenge and inspire both the performers and the audience. Areon Flutes also arranged existing works for flute quartet, adapting music from a wide range of genres and styles to suit the unique sound and character of the ensemble. One of the highlights of Areon Flutes' early career was their performance at the National Flute Association Convention in 2006. The ensemble was invited to perform a program of contemporary music, including several pieces that had been written specifically for them. The performance was a huge success, and it helped to establish Areon Flutes as a leading voice in the world of contemporary flute music. Over the years, the members of Areon Flutes have changed, but the ensemble's commitment to exploring new sounds and pushing the boundaries of traditional flute music has remained constant. Today, the ensemble is made up of Jill Heinke, Kassey Plaha, Meerenai Shim, and Nina Assimakopoulos. All four are accomplished flutists who bring their own unique perspectives and experiences to the ensemble. One of the most notable performances in Areon Flutes' recent history was their collaboration with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players in 2018. The two ensembles came together to perform a program of contemporary music that included works by John Luther Adams, Kaija Saariaho, and Steve Reich. The performance was a huge success, and it showcased the incredible range and versatility of both ensembles. Areon Flutes has also been recognized for their outstanding performances and contributions to the world of contemporary flute music. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The award recognized Areon Flutes' commitment to performing new and innovative music, and it helped to raise the ensemble's profile in the classical music world. In addition to their performances and awards, Areon Flutes is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs in schools and community centers, introducing young people to the world of classical music and inspiring them to explore their own creativity. Areon Flutes also offers masterclasses and workshops for flutists of all ages and skill levels, sharing their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of musicians.
