Role:ComposerDanny Clay is a contemporary classical music composer based in San Francisco, California. He was born in 1982 in Ohio, and grew up in a musical family. His mother was a pianist and his father played guitar, and they both encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Clay began playing piano at the age of five, and later picked up the trumpet and guitar. He attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with Joel Hoffman and Michael Fiday. He also studied with David Lang at the Bang on a Can Summer Institute. After completing his studies, Clay moved to San Francisco and began working as a freelance composer and sound artist. He has collaborated with a variety of artists and organizations, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, and the San Francisco Girls Chorus. One of Clay's most notable works is "Awake, Arise, You Sleepers!", a choral piece commissioned by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The piece was inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman, and explores themes of awakening and transformation. It premiered in 2017 and has since been performed by choirs around the world. Another notable work by Clay is "Memory Palace", a multimedia installation that combines sound, video, and sculpture. The piece was created in collaboration with visual artist Jon Fischer, and explores the concept of memory and how it is stored and retrieved. "Memory Palace" has been exhibited at galleries and museums around the United States. In addition to his work as a composer, Clay is also a dedicated educator. He has taught composition and music technology at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of San Francisco, and the San Francisco School of the Arts. Clay's music is characterized by its experimental and interdisciplinary nature. He often incorporates found objects and field recordings into his compositions, and is interested in exploring the boundaries between music and other art forms. His work has been described as "playful, inventive, and deeply emotional." Overall, Danny Clay is a talented and innovative composer who is pushing the boundaries of classical music. His work is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant, and he is sure to continue making an impact on the contemporary music scene for years to come.More....
