The Cherubini Quartett is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1982 in Cologne, Germany, by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Cherubini Quartett were Harald Schoneweg (violin), Andreas Moser (violin), Juergen Weber (viola), and Matthias Lingenfelder (cello). All four musicians had already established themselves as accomplished soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. They named their ensemble after Luigi Cherubini, an Italian composer who was known for his contributions to the development of the string quartet genre. From the beginning, the Cherubini Quartett set out to explore the full range of the string quartet repertoire, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to the modern compositions of Bartok and Shostakovich. They also sought to bring new and lesser-known works to audiences, often commissioning new pieces from contemporary composers. The quartet quickly gained a reputation for their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and innovative interpretations. They won several international competitions in their early years, including the Evian International String Quartet Competition in 1987 and the London International String Quartet Competition in 1991. Throughout their career, the Cherubini Quartett has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Mischa Maisky, and violinist Gidon Kremer. One of the highlights of the Cherubini Quartett's career was their complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets, which they performed over several years in various cities around the world. The quartet's interpretation of these works was praised for its depth, nuance, and emotional intensity. Another notable achievement of the Cherubini Quartett was their recording of the complete string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn. This recording, which was released in 2009, received critical acclaim and was hailed as a landmark achievement in the interpretation of Mendelssohn's music. Over the years, the Cherubini Quartett has undergone some changes in its membership. In 2005, Andreas Moser left the quartet and was replaced by Christian Stadelmann. In 2014, Harald Schoneweg retired from the quartet and was replaced by Sergey Malov. Despite these changes, the quartet has maintained its high standards of musical excellence and continues to inspire audiences around the world. In addition to their performances, the Cherubini Quartett is also committed to music education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians in many countries and have worked with organizations such as the European Union Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Germany. In recognition of their contributions to the world of classical music, the Cherubini Quartett has received numerous awards and honors. These include the Echo Klassik Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.
