The Delian Quartett is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 in Berlin, Germany. The quartet is made up of four members: violinists Andreas Moscho and Antonia Zimmermann, violist Anna-Maria Palii, and cellist Johanna Ruppert. The ensemble takes its name from the island of Delos in Greece, which was known in ancient times as a center of music and culture. The Delian Quartett has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting young ensembles in the classical music world. The quartet has won numerous awards and accolades for its performances, including the 2014 International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan, and the 2015 International Chamber Music Competition in Lyon, France. The quartet's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the classical and romantic periods as well as contemporary music. The ensemble is particularly known for its interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert, whose string quartets are considered some of the greatest works in the chamber music canon. The Delian Quartett's founding members, Andreas Moscho and Antonia Zimmermann, met while studying at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began playing together as a duo. In 2012, they decided to form a quartet and invited Anna-Maria Palii and Johanna Ruppert to join them. The quartet's first major performance was at the 2013 International Chamber Music Festival in Berlin, where they received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, also known as "Death and the Maiden." The quartet's performance was praised for its emotional intensity and technical precision. Since then, the Delian Quartett has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The quartet has also collaborated with some of the leading musicians of our time, including pianist Mitsuko Uchida and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Delian Quartett's career was their performance of Schubert's String Quartet No. 15 in G major at the 2015 International Chamber Music Competition in Lyon, France. The quartet's interpretation of the work was praised for its sensitivity and depth of feeling, and they were awarded first prize in the competition. In addition to their performances, the Delian Quartett is also committed to education and outreach. The quartet regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have worked with organizations such as the El Sistema music program in Venezuela to bring classical music to underserved communities. The Delian Quartett's recordings have also received critical acclaim. Their debut album, released in 2014, featured works by Schubert and was praised for its "exquisite playing" and "deeply felt interpretations" by Gramophone magazine. The quartet's second album, released in 2017, featured works by Beethoven and was similarly well-received. Overall, the Delian Quartett is a dynamic and exciting ensemble that is making a significant impact on the classical music world. With their technical prowess, emotional depth, and commitment to education and outreach, the quartet is sure to continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike for years to come.
