Role:Composer ConductorJoseph Phillips was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical violinist. From a young age, Phillips was exposed to a wide variety of music and began playing the cello at the age of four. Phillips showed exceptional talent on the cello and began studying with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the age of eight. He continued his studies with Ma for several years, and during this time, he also studied with other notable cellists such as Lynn Harrell and Janos Starker. In 2003, Phillips was accepted into the Juilliard School, where he studied with cellist Joel Krosnick. He graduated from Juilliard in 2007 with a Bachelor of Music degree and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with cellist Paul Katz. During his time at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music, Phillips won several awards and competitions, including the Juilliard Concerto Competition and the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition. He also performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After completing his studies, Phillips began performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. He has also performed at several music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to his solo performances, Phillips is also a member of several chamber music ensembles. He is a founding member of the Phillips Quartet, which has performed at major venues around the world and has released several recordings. He is also a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and has performed with the group at several concerts and festivals.
