The orchestra was founded in 1828 and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe. The founding of the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester can be traced back to the establishment of the Hamburg Opera House in 1827. The opera house was in need of a resident orchestra, and thus the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester was born. The orchestra's first conductor was Johann Christoph Westphal, who led the ensemble until 1832. Over the years, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester has had many notable conductors, including Gustav Mahler, Bruno Walter, and Wilhelm Furtwängler. In 1934, the orchestra was renamed the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1955 it became the official orchestra of the Hamburg State Opera. Today, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester is led by Kent Nagano, who has been the orchestra's principal conductor since 2015. Nagano is a renowned conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. The Philharmonisches Staatsorchester is made up of approximately 130 musicians, and its repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary. The orchestra performs regularly at the Hamburg State Opera and also gives concerts throughout Germany and internationally. One of the highlights of the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester's history was its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 1952. The performance was conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler and featured a choir of over 1,000 singers. The concert was a huge success and is still remembered as one of the greatest performances in the orchestra's history. In addition to its performances, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2019, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The Echo Klassik is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music and is given to outstanding recordings and performances. Overall, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester has a rich history and is widely regarded as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. With its talented musicians and renowned conductor, the orchestra continues to delight audiences with its exceptional performances and recordings.More....
