The Orchestre de Chambre Leopoldinum de Wroclaw is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1968 in Wroclaw, Poland. The ensemble was named after the Leopoldine Academy, which was a Jesuit college that was founded in Wroclaw in the 17th century. The ensemble was founded by a group of musicians who were interested in performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. The ensemble's founding members included violinist Jan Stanienda, cellist Jerzy Klocek, and harpsichordist Władysław Kłosiewicz. Over the years, the ensemble has had many different members, but it has always maintained a focus on performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. One of the highlights of the ensemble's early years was its performance at the 1972 Festival of Early Music in Bruges, Belgium. The ensemble's performance was well-received, and it helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading ensembles in the field of early music. In the years that followed, the ensemble continued to perform at festivals and concert halls throughout Europe and the United States. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include its 1985 performance at the Salzburg Festival, its 1990 performance at the Edinburgh International Festival, and its 1992 performance at the Lincoln Center in New York City. The ensemble has also recorded extensively over the years, with over 50 recordings to its name. Some of the ensemble's most notable recordings include its recordings of the complete chamber music of Franz Schubert, the complete string quartets of Joseph Haydn, and the complete keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to its performances and recordings, the ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1980, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of the complete chamber music of Franz Schubert. In 1992, the ensemble was awarded the Diapason d'Or for its recording of the complete string quartets of Joseph Haydn. And in 2008, the ensemble was awarded the Fryderyk Award, which is the highest award for classical music in Poland, for its recording of the complete keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, the Orchestre de Chambre Leopoldinum de Wroclaw continues to be one of the leading ensembles in the field of early music.
