Quattro Mani is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 by pianists Susan Grace and Alice Rybak. The duo has gained international recognition for their innovative programming and virtuosic performances of contemporary and classical music. Susan Grace and Alice Rybak met while studying at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. They quickly discovered a shared passion for contemporary music and began performing together as Quattro Mani. The name, which means "four hands" in Italian, reflects the ensemble's focus on piano duets. Quattro Mani's repertoire spans a wide range of styles and eras, from Bach and Mozart to contemporary composers like George Crumb and John Adams. The duo is known for their adventurous programming, often pairing works from different time periods or commissioning new pieces from living composers. One of Quattro Mani's early successes was their 1992 debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The performance featured works by contemporary composers including George Crumb and Frederic Rzewski, and was praised by critics for its "dazzling virtuosity" and "impeccable ensemble playing." Since then, Quattro Mani has performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including soprano Dawn Upshaw, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and the Kronos Quartet. In addition to their performances, Quattro Mani is also committed to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops at universities and conservatories around the world, and have worked with young musicians through programs like the National Youth Orchestra of the United States. Quattro Mani has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. They were named "Best Chamber Music Recording" at the 2002 Grammy Awards for their album of George Crumb's music, and have been praised by critics for their "dazzling technique" and "uncommon musical intelligence." Despite their success, Quattro Mani remains committed to exploring new musical territory and pushing the boundaries of classical music. As Susan Grace has said, "We're always looking for new challenges and new ways to express ourselves through music.
