Artist Info
Voices of Ascension is a classical music ensemble based in New York City that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over 30 years. The ensemble was founded in 1989 by conductor and artistic director Dennis Keene, who envisioned a group that would specialize in the performance of choral music from the Renaissance to the present day. Keene, a graduate of the Juilliard School and Yale University, had previously served as the music director of the New York Choral Society and the Church of the Ascension in Greenwich Village. He assembled a group of talented singers from the New York area, many of whom were also members of the New York Choral Society, to form Voices of Ascension. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its impeccable musicianship and innovative programming. Voices of Ascension's repertoire includes works by composers such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten, as well as lesser-known works by contemporary composers. One of the highlights of Voices of Ascension's early years was its performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor in 1991. The ensemble's interpretation of this monumental work was praised by critics and audiences alike, and it remains one of the group's signature pieces. Over the years, Voices of Ascension has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, and conductor Robert Spano. The ensemble has also performed with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestra of St. Luke's. In addition to its concert performances, Voices of Ascension has also recorded extensively. The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been nominated for several Grammy Awards. Notable recordings include a collection of Bach's motets, a recording of Handel's Messiah, and a collection of American choral music. Voices of Ascension has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs in schools and community centers, and it has established a program to mentor young conductors and composers. In 2019, Voices of Ascension celebrated its 30th anniversary with a series of concerts and events. The ensemble continues to be a leading force in the world of choral music, and its performances are eagerly anticipated by audiences around the world.More....
