Born in Milan, Italy, on May 22, 1956, Magistrelli showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of 10. He studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, where he received his diploma in clarinet performance. Magistrelli's career as a professional musician began in 1978 when he joined the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. He quickly established himself as a talented clarinetist and was soon invited to perform with other orchestras in Italy and abroad. In 1982, he became the principal clarinetist of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Magistrelli's talent as a soloist was also recognized early on in his career. In 1980, he won first prize at the International Competition for Wind Instruments in Prague, and in 1982, he won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. These awards helped to establish him as one of the leading clarinetists of his generation. Throughout his career, Magistrelli has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He has appeared as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also been a member of several chamber groups, including the Ensemble Wien-Berlin and the Ensemble InterContemporain.
