The orchestra was founded in 1951 as part of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, which is the national public broadcaster of Denmark. The ensemble has since become one of the most renowned chamber orchestras in Europe, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra has had a number of notable conductors throughout its history, including Mogens Wöldike, Thomas Jensen, and Herbert Blomstedt. The orchestra has also collaborated with many prominent soloists, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin, pianist Emil Gilels, and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. One of the highlights of the Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1956 Edinburgh International Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Danish composer Carl Nielsen. The orchestra has also performed at many other prestigious venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to its live performances, the Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra has also recorded extensively, with over 300 recordings to its name. The orchestra has recorded works by a wide range of composers, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky, as well as many Danish composers such as Nielsen, Per Nørgård, and Poul Ruders. Over the years, the Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1978, the orchestra was awarded the Sonning Music Prize, which is one of the most prestigious music awards in Denmark. The orchestra has also received several Grammy nominations for its recordings, including a nomination for Best Classical Album in 2003 for its recording of Nielsen's Symphony No. 3. Despite its many achievements, the Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra has faced some challenges in recent years. In 2014, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation announced that it would be disbanding the orchestra as part of a cost-cutting measure. However, the decision was met with widespread protest from musicians and music lovers, and the orchestra was eventually saved thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and support from the Danish government. Today, the Danish State Radio Chamber Orchestra continues to perform and record, under the leadership of conductor Adam Fischer. The orchestra remains committed to its mission of promoting classical music and showcasing the talents of Danish musicians to audiences around the world.More....
