Polytech Choir is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over 50 years. The choir was founded in 1968 by a group of students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines who shared a passion for music and singing. From its humble beginnings, the choir has grown to become one of the most respected and acclaimed choral groups in the Philippines. Under the leadership of its various conductors, the choir has consistently delivered outstanding performances that have earned them numerous awards and accolades. One of the highlights of the choir's early years was their participation in the 1972 International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. This was the choir's first international competition, and they made a strong impression with their performance of traditional Filipino songs. The choir was awarded the Silver Medal in the Folk Song category, which was a significant achievement for a relatively new choir. Over the years, the choir has continued to participate in various international competitions and festivals, showcasing their versatility and musicality. In 1982, the choir won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, which was a major milestone in their history. This victory cemented the choir's reputation as one of the best choral groups in the world. The choir has also had the privilege of performing for various heads of state and dignitaries, including Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth II, and former Philippine President Corazon Aquino. These performances have not only showcased the choir's musical prowess but also their ability to represent their country with pride and dignity. One of the choir's most significant achievements was their performance at the 2002 World Choral Symposium in Minneapolis, USA. This was a prestigious event that brought together some of the best choral groups from around the world. The Polytech Choir's performance was widely acclaimed, and they received a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to their international performances, the choir has also been active in promoting choral music in the Philippines. They have organized various workshops and seminars for aspiring choral singers and conductors, and have also collaborated with other local choral groups to promote the art form. The choir's repertoire is diverse, ranging from traditional Filipino folk songs to classical choral works. They have also commissioned new works from Filipino composers, which has helped to promote local talent and showcase the richness of Filipino culture. Throughout their history, the Polytech Choir has been led by several distinguished conductors, including Prof. Felipe de Leon Jr., Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion, and Prof. Maria Lourdes Hermo. These conductors have played a significant role in shaping the choir's sound and musical direction, and their contributions have been invaluable to the choir's success. In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the Polytech Choir has received numerous awards and honors over the years. These include the Presidential Award for Outstanding Filipino Individuals and Organizations, the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, and the Ani ng Dangal Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Despite their many accomplishments, the Polytech Choir remains committed to their mission of promoting choral music and representing the Philippines on the world stage.
