FranceBirth:1682 in Paris, FranceDeath:January 17, 1738Period:BaroqueGenre:ChoralKeyboardJean-François Dandrieu was a French composer and organist who lived during the Baroque period. He was born on December 26, 1682, in Paris, France, to a family of musicians. His father, Pierre Dandrieu, was an organist at the Saint-Merri church in Paris, and his uncle, Jean-Baptiste Dandrieu, was also a well-known composer and organist. Jean-François Dandrieu showed an early interest in music and began studying the organ with his father at a young age. He also received instruction in composition from his uncle, Jean-Baptiste Dandrieu. By the age of 15, he had already become an accomplished organist and was appointed as the organist at the Saint-Merri church, succeeding his father. Dandrieu's talent as a composer soon became evident, and he began to receive commissions for his works. In 1705, he published his first collection of organ music, entitled "Premier livre de pièces d'orgue." This collection was well-received and established Dandrieu as a leading composer of organ music in France. Over the next few years, Dandrieu continued to compose and publish music, including several collections of harpsichord music and chamber music. In 1714, he was appointed as the organist at the Saint-Louis-des-Invalides church in Paris, a position he held for the rest of his life. Dandrieu's music was characterized by its elegance, refinement, and technical virtuosity. He was particularly skilled at writing music for the organ, and his works for this instrument are still performed and admired today. His music was also influenced by the French Baroque style, which emphasized clarity, symmetry, and ornamentation. One of Dandrieu's most famous works is his "Livre de Noëls," a collection of Christmas carols arranged for the organ. This collection, which was published in 1739, includes 12 carols, each with its own unique character and style. The "Livre de Noëls" is still performed today and is considered one of the most important works of French Baroque organ music. In addition to his organ music, Dandrieu also composed chamber music, including sonatas for violin and harpsichord. His chamber music is characterized by its delicate melodies and intricate counterpoint, and it is still performed and admired today. Dandrieu's influence on French Baroque music was significant, and his works were widely admired during his lifetime. He was known for his technical virtuosity and his ability to write music that was both elegant and expressive. His music was also influential in the development of the French Classical style, which emerged in the mid-18th century. Jean-François Dandrieu died on January 17, 1738, in Paris, France. His legacy as a composer and organist continues to be celebrated today, and his music remains an important part of the French Baroque repertoire.More....
