Sejong Soloists is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1995 by Hyo Kang, a renowned violinist and professor at the Juilliard School in New York City. The ensemble is named after King Sejong the Great, who was a patron of the arts and a supporter of music education in Korea. The founding members of Sejong Soloists were all students of Hyo Kang at Juilliard, and they shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a new kind of ensemble that would combine the intimacy and flexibility of a chamber group with the virtuosity and power of a full orchestra. The ensemble's original members included violinists Hyo Kang, Kyung Sun Lee, and Yura Lee, violist Richard O'Neill, cellist Min-Young Kim, and pianist Mihae Lee. Since its founding, Sejong Soloists has become one of the most acclaimed and innovative chamber ensembles in the world, known for its dynamic performances, innovative programming, and commitment to music education. The ensemble has performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. Sejong Soloists has also collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, and Gil Shaham, and has commissioned and premiered numerous new works by contemporary composers. One of the highlights of Sejong Soloists' career was its performance at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where the ensemble played for an audience of millions and received widespread acclaim for its virtuosity and energy. The ensemble has also won numerous awards and accolades, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) Grand Prize for Classical Music. Sejong Soloists' current members include violinists Hyo Kang, Kyung Sun Lee, and Yura Lee, violist Richard O'Neill, cellist Min-Young Kim, and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. The ensemble continues to push the boundaries of chamber music and inspire audiences around the world with its passion, creativity, and virtuosity.
