Period:ModernGenre:OperaJacques Jansen was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 22, 1906, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Jansen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to singing and began taking voice lessons at the age of 14. Jansen's talent as a singer was quickly recognized, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He continued his studies in Paris, where he trained with the famous French baritone, Charles Panzéra. Jansen's voice was a lyric tenor, and he was known for his beautiful tone and expressive phrasing. Jansen made his professional debut in 1930, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Amsterdam Opera. He quickly established himself as one of the leading tenors of his generation, and his career took off. He performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. One of Jansen's most famous roles was that of Don Ottavio in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." He performed this role many times throughout his career and was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of the role. Jansen was also known for his performances of French opera, particularly the works of Debussy and Ravel. Jansen's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he was forced to flee the Netherlands and go into hiding. After the war, he resumed his career and continued to perform until his retirement in 1966. Jansen was awarded many honors throughout his career, including the Order of Orange-Nassau, one of the highest honors in the Netherlands. Jansen was also a respected teacher and taught at the Rotterdam Conservatory for many years.
