Role:ConductorPeriod:ModernGenre:ChamberGail Williams is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born on August 5, 1955, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a trumpet player, and her mother was a pianist. Williams started playing the piano at the age of four and later switched to the French horn when she was in high school. Williams attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in French horn performance. She then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Master of Music degree in French horn performance. During her time at Juilliard, Williams studied with renowned horn players such as Myron Bloom and James Chambers. After completing her studies, Williams joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as the principal horn player in 1978. She held this position for 21 years and was the first woman to hold a principal horn position in a major American orchestra. During her time with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Williams performed under the direction of some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, and Leonard Bernstein. In addition to her work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Williams has also performed with other major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She has also been a member of the Summit Brass ensemble and has performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians. Williams has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1989, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for solo careers. She was also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship in 1990. In addition to her work as a performer, Williams is also a respected teacher and has held teaching positions at several universities, including Northwestern University, DePaul University, and the University of Miami. She has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world and has served as a judge for several international music competitions. Williams has recorded several albums throughout her career, including "Horn Music of the 20th Century," which features works by composers such as Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Summit Brass ensemble. In 1999, Williams left the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to pursue a career as a soloist and chamber musician. Since then, she has continued to perform around the world and has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Menahem Pressler and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, Williams was diagnosed with focal dystonia, a neurological disorder that affects the muscles used for playing the French horn. Despite this setback, Williams has continued to perform and has adapted her playing technique to accommodate the condition. She has also become an advocate for musicians with focal dystonia and has worked to raise awareness of the condition within the music community. In recognition of her contributions to the world of music, Williams was awarded the International Horn Society's Punto Award in 2017. The award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the horn community.More....
