Katona began playing the guitar at the age of six, and by the time he was ten, he was already performing in public. Katona's early musical education was at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest, where he studied with József Eötvös. He later continued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied with János Kórodi. During his time at the academy, Katona won several awards, including the first prize at the National Guitar Competition in Hungary. After completing his studies, Katona began performing as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. In 1980, he formed the Katona Twins with his brother, Ferenc. The Katona Twins went on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They also performed at numerous international festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. In addition to their performances as a duo, the Katona Twins also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles. They performed with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the English Chamber Orchestra, among others. Throughout his career, Julius Katona was recognized for his outstanding musicianship. He won numerous awards, including the Hungarian State Prize for Art in 1985 and the Franz Liszt Prize in 1996.
