She was born on May 22, 1960, in Montreal, Canada, to a family of musicians. Her father, Jean Plouffe, was a violinist, and her mother, Louise-Andree Baril, was a pianist. Helene grew up in a musical environment and started playing the violin at the age of four. Helene's talent was evident from a young age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Quebec, where she received her diploma in violin performance at the age of 16. She then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree. Helene's career as a professional musician began in 1982 when she joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist.
