Edelmiro Arnaltes was a Spanish classical music composer and conductor, born on January 1, 1941, in Madrid, Spain. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Arnaltes began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition at the Madrid Conservatory. He later went on to study conducting with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich, Germany. Arnaltes' career as a composer began in the 1960s, and he quickly gained recognition for his unique style and innovative approach to classical music. His compositions were often characterized by their use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms, as well as their incorporation of elements from Spanish folk music. One of Arnaltes' most notable works is his "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1971 by the Spanish National Orchestra. The piece was written for the renowned Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes and is considered one of the most important works in the guitar concerto repertoire. Arnaltes' career as a conductor began in the 1970s, and he quickly established himself as one of the most talented and sought-after conductors in Spain. He served as the principal conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra from 1978 to 1981 and later went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Arnaltes received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1983, he was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and in 1991, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Arts by the Spanish government. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría. Arnaltes continued to compose and conduct until his death on December 28, 2019, at the age of 78. His legacy as a composer and conductor continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world, and his contributions to classical music will be remembered for generations to come.
