Lydia Artymiw is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Philadelphia in 1946, Artymiw began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was mentored by legendary pianist Rudolf Serkin. After completing her studies at Curtis, Artymiw embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing with major orchestras and at prestigious venues around the world. She has been praised for her technical precision, expressive playing, and ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she performs. One of Artymiw's early career highlights came in 1976, when she won the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. This victory helped to launch her career and establish her as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the years, Artymiw has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also been a frequent guest artist at major music festivals, such as the Tanglewood Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. In addition to her work as a soloist, Artymiw is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has collaborated with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Guarneri Quartet and the Tokyo String Quartet. Her recordings of chamber music have been widely praised for their sensitivity and musicality. Artymiw has also been recognized for her contributions to the classical music world with numerous awards and honors. In 1998, she was awarded the McKnight Distinguished Artist Award, which recognizes outstanding artists in Minnesota. She has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship. Throughout her career, Artymiw has remained committed to promoting classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. She has taught at the University of Minnesota since 1989 and has mentored many young pianists who have gone on to successful careers in music. In addition to her work as a performer and teacher, Artymiw is also an avid supporter of new music. She has commissioned and premiered works by many contemporary composers, including Joan Tower and John Harbison. Despite her many accomplishments, Artymiw remains humble and dedicated to her craft.
