Hyde-Smith's career as a professional musician began in the 1950s when he joined the London Symphony Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a talented clarinetist and became a sought-after performer. In 1957, he was appointed as the principal clarinetist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During his time with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hyde-Smith performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall.
