He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Schonbaumsfeld showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Schonbaumsfeld's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under the renowned pianist, Friedrich Gulda. Schonbaumsfeld's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1968, Schonbaumsfeld made his debut performance at the Vienna Musikverein, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. He was just 18 years old at the time, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. This performance marked the beginning of Schonbaumsfeld's career as a professional pianist. Over the next few years, Schonbaumsfeld continued to perform at various venues across Europe, including the Salzburg Festival and the Berlin Philharmonic. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation, and his performances were highly sought after. In 1972, Schonbaumsfeld won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Russia. Following his win at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Schonbaumsfeld's career skyrocketed.
