He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1967 and went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the same institution in 1969. After completing his studies, Colwell began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1971, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57, also known as the "Appassionata." Throughout his career, Colwell performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Seiji Ozawa. One of Colwell's most significant achievements was his performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1975. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which received critical acclaim and won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance, Instrumental Soloist or Soloists (with or without orchestra) in 1976. Colwell was also a prolific recording artist, and he released numerous albums throughout his career.
