Born on August 23, 1946, in Riga, Latvia, Ozolins began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his mother, who was a pianist and music teacher. Ozolins' talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became known as a prodigy in his native Latvia. He made his public debut at the age of six, performing a Mozart concerto with the Latvian State Symphony Orchestra.
