André Ceccarelli is a French jazz drummer and composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on December 5, 1946, in Nice, France, Ceccarelli grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. As a child, Ceccarelli was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, classical, and pop. Ceccarelli began playing the drums at the age of 14 and quickly developed a passion for jazz music. He started his professional career in the early 1970s, playing with various jazz bands in France. In 1975, he joined the legendary French jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani's trio, which helped him gain recognition as a talented drummer. Throughout his career, Ceccarelli has collaborated with some of the most prominent jazz musicians in the world, including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Didier Lockwood, and John McLaughlin. He has also worked with many classical musicians, including the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. One of Ceccarelli's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the French composer and conductor Michel Legrand. In 1982, Ceccarelli played drums on Legrand's album "Images," which won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). Ceccarelli and Legrand continued to work together on several other projects, including the soundtrack for the film "Yentl," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. In addition to his work as a drummer, Ceccarelli is also a talented composer. He has released several albums as a bandleader, including "Ceccarelli," "West Side Story," and "Golden Land." His compositions are known for their unique blend of jazz, classical, and world music influences. Ceccarelli has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of music. In 1998, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for his achievements in the arts. In 2016, he was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for his album "Golden Land." Throughout his career, Ceccarelli has remained dedicated to his craft and has continued to push the boundaries of jazz and classical music.
