Born on August 27, 1925, in London, England, Crombie grew up in a musical family and began playing the drums at a young age. He was a self-taught musician who learned to play by listening to jazz records and attending live performances. Crombie's career in music began in the 1940s when he joined the Royal Air Force as a drummer. After his service, he returned to London and began playing with various jazz bands, including the Ted Heath Orchestra and the Ronnie Scott Quartet. In 1949, he formed his own band, the Tony Crombie Orchestra, which quickly gained popularity in the UK. Throughout the 1950s, Crombie continued to perform with his orchestra and also worked as a session musician, playing on recordings for artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. He also composed music for films, including the 1956 movie "The Battle of the River Plate." One of Crombie's most significant contributions to classical music was his work as a composer and arranger for the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1960, he was commissioned to write a piece for the orchestra, which resulted in his composition "Man From Mars Suite." The piece was well-received and showcased Crombie's ability to blend jazz and classical music. Crombie continued to work with the London Symphony Orchestra throughout the 1960s, composing and arranging music for several of their recordings. He also collaborated with other classical musicians, including pianist John Dankworth and conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent. In addition to his work in classical music, Crombie remained active in the jazz scene. He formed a new band, the Tony Crombie Jazz Inc., in the 1960s and continued to perform with them until the 1980s. He also worked as a music educator, teaching at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Crombie's contributions to music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1978, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also inducted into the British Jazz Hall of Fame in 2005. Tony Crombie passed away on October 18, 1999, at the age of 74. His legacy as a musician and composer continues to inspire and influence musicians today.More....
