His father, David Johnston, was a cellist with the renowned Fitzwilliam String Quartet, and his mother, Stephanie Gonley, was a violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra. Growing up in such a musical environment, it was no surprise that Guy developed a passion for music at a young age. Guy began playing the cello at the age of four, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. He received his early musical education at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, where he studied with renowned cellist, Steven Doane. He later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was a student of David Strange. Guy's talent as a cellist was evident from a young age, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the world of classical music. In 1999, at the age of 18, he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, which is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. This was a major turning point in Guy's career, and it opened up many doors for him. Following his success at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Guy began to perform regularly as a soloist with some of the world's leading orchestras. He has performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and many others. He has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. In addition to his solo performances, Guy is also a highly sought-after chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Belcea Quartet, the Elias Quartet, and the Jerusalem Quartet. He is also a member of the Aronowitz Ensemble, which is a group of young musicians who are dedicated to promoting the music of lesser-known composers. Guy is known for his passionate and expressive playing style, and he has received critical acclaim for his performances. The Guardian has described him as "a cellist of exceptional gifts", while The Times has praised his "rich, warm tone and impeccable technique". He has also been praised for his ability to connect with audiences, and for his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he plays. In addition to his performing career, Guy is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the Yehudi Menuhin School, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is also a mentor for the London Symphony Orchestra's Discovery programme, which is a scheme that provides young musicians with the opportunity to work with professional musicians. Throughout his career, Guy has received many awards and honours. In addition to winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, he has also won the Guilhermina Suggia Gift, which is a prestigious award for young cellists. He has also been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship, which is given to outstanding young musicians. Guy has also recorded several albums, including a recording of the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven, which was released in 2014. He has also recorded works by Brahms, Schumann, and Britten, among others.
