Goran Filipec is a Croatian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative programming. He was born on May 23, 1981, in Virovitica, Croatia, and began playing the piano at the age of five. His talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying with renowned teachers such as Arbo Valdma and Vladimir Krpan. Filipec's early career was marked by numerous awards and accolades. In 1995, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Pinerolo, Italy, and in 1996, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. He went on to win prizes at several other competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Rome, the International Piano Competition in Andorra, and the International Piano Competition in Valencia. In 2003, Filipec graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Music with honors, and he continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany, where he studied with Arie Vardi. During this time, he also participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Lazar Berman, Dmitri Bashkirov, and Fou Ts'ong. Filipec's career took off in the early 2000s, when he began performing extensively throughout Europe and Asia. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist with a unique and innovative approach to programming. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Filipec's most notable performances was his 2012 recital at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he performed all of Franz Liszt's Transcendental Etudes in a single concert. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Filipec's virtuosic playing and innovative programming were widely praised. Filipec has also gained recognition for his recordings, which include works by Liszt, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. His recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes was released in 2013 to critical acclaim, and his recording of Chopin's complete works for piano and orchestra with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra was released in 2018. In addition to his performing and recording career, Filipec is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, and he has given masterclasses throughout Europe and Asia. Filipec's innovative programming and virtuosic playing have earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2014, he was awarded the Croatian Music Institute Award for his contribution to Croatian music, and in 2015, he was awarded the Porin Award for Best Classical Music Album for his recording of Chopin's complete works for piano and orchestra. He has also been awarded the Medal of the City of Virovitica, the Medal of the City of Zagreb, and the Order of Danica Hrvatska. Today, Filipec is recognized as one of the leading pianists of his generation, and his innovative programming and virtuosic playing continue to captivate audiences around the world.
