Inscape is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2004 by Richard Scerbo, a violinist and conductor. The ensemble is based in Washington, D.C. and is known for its innovative programming and performances that blend classical music with other genres. The founding of Inscape was inspired by Scerbo's desire to create a chamber music ensemble that would be dedicated to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. He assembled a group of talented musicians from the Washington, D.C. area, including members of the National Symphony Orchestra and other prominent ensembles. The ensemble's name, Inscape, is derived from the term "inscape" coined by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, which refers to the unique essence or inner nature of a thing. This concept of exploring the inner nature of music is central to Inscape's approach to performance. Inscape's core ensemble consists of 20 musicians, including strings, winds, brass, and percussion. The ensemble also frequently collaborates with guest artists and composers, and has premiered numerous new works by contemporary composers. One of Inscape's most notable performances was its 2011 debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The program featured works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, as well as a new work by composer Christopher Theofanidis. The performance was praised by critics for its energy, precision, and innovative programming. In addition to its performances in the Washington, D.C. area, Inscape has toured extensively throughout the United States and internationally. The ensemble has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. Inscape has also been recognized for its excellence in performance and programming. The ensemble has received numerous awards and grants, including the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music Performance Program Grant, and the National Endowment for the Arts Art Works Grant. Inscape's commitment to innovation and exploration has also led to collaborations with artists and organizations outside of the classical music world. The ensemble has worked with dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers to create multimedia performances that blend music with other art forms. Overall, Inscape has established itself as a leading chamber music ensemble that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of classical music performance. With its innovative programming, commitment to new music, and exceptional musicianship, Inscape continues to inspire audiences and musicians alike.
