Gregory Spears is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in 1974 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. His parents were both music teachers, and his father was also a composer. Spears attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied composition with Samuel Adler and Christopher Rouse. After completing his studies at Eastman, Spears moved to New York City, where he began to establish himself as a composer. He became involved with the New York new music scene and began to collaborate with other composers and performers. In 2005, he co-founded the New York-based ensemble, The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), which has since become one of the leading ensembles for contemporary classical music in the United States. Spears' music is characterized by its simplicity and clarity. He often draws on minimalist techniques, such as repetition and gradual transformation, but his music is also influenced by early music and folk music. His compositions are often inspired by literature and poetry, and he has set texts by a wide range of writers, including William Shakespeare, Gertrude Stein, and James Joyce. One of Spears' most well-known works is his opera, "Paul's Case," which is based on the short story by Willa Cather. The opera premiered in 2013 at the PROTOTYPE Festival in New York City and has since been performed at several other venues, including the Pittsburgh Opera and the Boston Lyric Opera. The opera tells the story of a young man named Paul who is unhappy with his life in Pittsburgh and dreams of escaping to New York City. The opera explores themes of alienation, identity, and the search for meaning. Another notable work by Spears is his chamber opera, "Fellow Travelers," which premiered in 2016 at the Cincinnati Opera. The opera is set in Washington, D.C. during the McCarthy era and tells the story of two men who fall in love while working for the government. The opera explores themes of love, politics, and the tension between personal and public life. In addition to his operas, Spears has also composed a number of instrumental works, including "Requiem," which was commissioned by the New York City Ballet and premiered in 2018. The work is a tribute to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, and features a solo cello accompanied by a string orchestra. Spears' music has been performed by a wide range of ensembles and performers, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the JACK Quartet. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Overall, Gregory Spears is a composer who has made a significant contribution to the contemporary classical music scene in the United States. His music is characterized by its simplicity and clarity, and he has explored a wide range of themes and subjects in his compositions. His operas, in particular, have received critical acclaim and have helped to establish him as one of the leading opera composers of his generation.
