She was born on May 12, 1925, in New York City, to a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Ruth showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. Ruth's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where she studied piano under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne. Ruth's exceptional talent and hard work paid off, and she graduated with honors from Juilliard. After completing her studies, Ruth began performing in concerts and recitals across the United States. Her performances were highly acclaimed, and she quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile pianist. She was known for her technical proficiency, musical sensitivity, and ability to connect with her audience. In 1950, Ruth made her debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Ruth received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. This performance marked the beginning of Ruth's career as a soloist with major orchestras around the world. Over the years, Ruth performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. One of Ruth's most memorable performances was her rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1962. The performance was recorded and released as an album, which became a best-seller and earned Ruth a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance. Throughout her career, Ruth was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She taught at the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music, where she inspired and influenced many aspiring pianists. Ruth's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to her Grammy Award, she received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1987, the National Medal of Arts in 1991, and the Glenn Gould Prize in 1993. Despite her many achievements, Ruth remained humble and dedicated to her craft. She continued to perform and teach until her death on June 17, 2003, at the age of 78.
