He was born into a Jewish family, and his father was a violinist who played in the local orchestra. Gingold showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of seven. Gingold's family moved to Warsaw when he was nine years old, and he continued his violin studies with Mieczyslaw Michalowicz, a renowned violinist and teacher. In 1920, Gingold's family moved to the United States, and he continued his studies with Vladimir Graffman in New York City. In 1928, Gingold won the Naumburg International Violin Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Gingold was known for his beautiful tone and his ability to convey emotion through his playing. He was also a respected teacher, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as soloists and orchestral musicians. One of Gingold's most memorable performances was his 1955 performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fritz Reiner. The performance was recorded and is still considered one of the greatest recordings of the concerto. Gingold was also a frequent performer at the Marlboro Music Festival, where he collaborated with other renowned musicians such as Rudolf Serkin and Pablo Casals. He was a member of the faculty at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music from 1951 until his death in 1995. Throughout his career, Gingold received many awards and honors, including the National Medal of Arts in 1987 and the Indiana Governor's Arts Award in 1994. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1997.
