Corvina Consort is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 in Budapest, Hungary. The ensemble is known for its unique approach to early music, combining historical research with modern interpretation to create a fresh and dynamic sound. The founding members of Corvina Consort were all graduates of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and shared a passion for early music. The ensemble takes its name from the Corvina Library, a collection of medieval manuscripts housed in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest. The main members of Corvina Consort are Zsombor Ágoston (violin), Máté Szabó Sipos (violin), Péter Szabó (viola da gamba), and Levente Kuzma (harpsichord). The ensemble is occasionally joined by guest musicians, depending on the repertoire being performed. Corvina Consort has performed at numerous festivals and concert series throughout Europe, including the Early Music Festival in Prague, the Festival de Música Antiga de Barcelona, and the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht. The ensemble has also performed in prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Wigmore Hall in London. One of the highlights of Corvina Consort's career was their performance at the 2016 Bachfest Leipzig, where they were invited to perform as part of the festival's "Young Bach" series. The ensemble received critical acclaim for their performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, with the Leipziger Volkszeitung praising their "exquisite playing" and "impressive technical skill." Corvina Consort has also been recognized for their recordings, receiving the Gramophone Editor's Choice award for their album "Biber: The Mystery Sonatas" in 2018. The album, which features the ensemble's interpretation of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's 17th-century violin sonatas, was praised for its "impeccable musicianship" and "sensitive interpretation." In addition to their performances and recordings, Corvina Consort is committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring early music to a wider audience. Overall, Corvina Consort has established itself as a leading ensemble in the world of early music, known for their innovative approach and exceptional musicianship. With a growing discography and a busy concert schedule, the ensemble shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
