Ferio Saxophone Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and virtuosic performances since their founding in 2012. The quartet consists of four members: Huw Wiggin (soprano saxophone), Ellie McMurray (alto saxophone), Jose Bañuls (tenor saxophone), and Shevaughan Beere (baritone saxophone). The ensemble was founded by Wiggin and McMurray, who met while studying at the Royal College of Music in London. They were both passionate about the saxophone and wanted to explore the possibilities of the instrument in a chamber music setting. They recruited Bañuls and Beere to complete the quartet, and Ferio Saxophone Quartet was born. From the beginning, the quartet was committed to pushing the boundaries of what was possible with the saxophone. They sought out new and challenging repertoire, often commissioning new works from contemporary composers. They also experimented with different styles of music, incorporating elements of jazz, folk, and world music into their performances. One of the highlights of Ferio Saxophone Quartet's early career was their performance at the 2015 Royal Overseas League Music Competition. They won first prize in the Wind and Percussion category, as well as the overall competition. This was a major achievement for the quartet, and it helped to raise their profile in the classical music world. Since then, Ferio Saxophone Quartet has gone on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. They have appeared at the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Edinburgh International Festival, among others. They have also collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including pianist Julius Drake, cellist Guy Johnston, and the BBC Singers. One of the quartet's most notable collaborations was with the renowned composer and conductor John Rutter. They worked with Rutter on his new composition, "Visions," which was premiered at the 2016 Three Choirs Festival. The piece was a great success, and it has since been performed by other ensembles around the world. Ferio Saxophone Quartet has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. Their debut album, "Revive," was released in 2016 and featured works by Debussy, Ravel, and Piazzolla, among others. Their second album, "Flux," was released in 2018 and included works by contemporary composers such as Graham Fitkin and Guillermo Lago. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ferio Saxophone Quartet is also committed to education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians in schools and community groups, sharing their love of the saxophone and classical music with the next generation. Overall, Ferio Saxophone Quartet is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the saxophone. Their virtuosic performances and commitment to new and challenging repertoire have earned them a place among the top chamber music ensembles in the world.
