Founded in 1960 by Dr. Julius Herford, the ensemble has become one of the most respected choral groups in the world. Dr. Herford, who was a professor of music at Indiana University, had a vision of creating a chamber choir that would perform a wide range of choral music, from the Renaissance to contemporary works. He handpicked the members of the ensemble, selecting only the most talented and dedicated singers from the university's music program. Over the years, the Indiana University Chamber Singers has had many talented members, including some who have gone on to become world-renowned musicians. Some of the most notable members of the ensemble include soprano Sylvia McNair, tenor Vinson Cole, and baritone Nathan Gunn. The ensemble has performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and South America. They have also performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and venues, such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and Carnegie Hall. One of the highlights of the Indiana University Chamber Singers' career was their performance at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. The ensemble performed a program of American music, which included works by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein. Their performance was so well-received that they were invited to perform at the White House for President Ronald Reagan. The Indiana University Chamber Singers has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1986, they won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Tolosa, Spain. They have also won several awards at the prestigious International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland.
