Artist Info
Herman Wallén was a Swedish classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1985, in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Wallén showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later switched to the cello at the age of six, which became his primary instrument. Wallén's talent was evident from an early age, and he began performing in public at the age of eight. He received his first major award at the age of ten when he won the Swedish National Cello Competition. This was followed by several other awards, including the Nordic Soloist Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. Wallén's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied with renowned cellist Torleif Thedéen. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied with David Geringas. During his time in Berlin, Wallén also had the opportunity to work with other notable musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma and Daniel Barenboim. Wallén's career as a professional musician began in earnest in 2008 when he won the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. This was a major turning point in his career, as it brought him to the attention of the international music community. Following his win, Wallén began performing extensively throughout Europe and Asia, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber music ensembles. One of Wallén's most notable performances took place in 2011 when he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. This was a major milestone in Wallén's career, as it allowed him to showcase his talent on one of the world's most prestigious stages. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Wallén's technical skill and emotional depth. In addition to his solo performances, Wallén was also a member of several chamber music ensembles, including the Wallén Quartet and the Trio con Brio Copenhagen. With the Wallén Quartet, he won the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2013, which provided the group with funding and support for their future projects. The Trio con Brio Copenhagen, which Wallén joined in 2018, was also highly acclaimed, with the group receiving numerous awards and accolades for their performances. Throughout his career, Wallén was known for his dedication to contemporary music, and he frequently collaborated with living composers to create new works for the cello. He premiered several new pieces, including works by Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, and Anders Hillborg. Wallén was also a passionate advocate for music education, and he frequently gave masterclasses and workshops to young musicians. Tragically, Wallén's career was cut short when he passed away on December 22, 2019, at the age of 34. His death was a shock to the music community, and many of his colleagues and fans mourned his passing. Despite his short career, Wallén left a lasting impact on the world of classical music, and his legacy continues to inspire young musicians around the world.More....
