Birth:in Baltimore, MDPeriod:RomanticModernGenre:ChamberOrchestralSymphonyDavid Hardy is a renowned cellist and music educator who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in 1954 in Washington, D.C., Hardy grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, so he was surrounded by music at home. Hardy began playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the best cello teachers in the country, including Leonard Rose, who was one of the most prominent cellists of the 20th century. Hardy also studied with David Soyer, the cellist of the Guarneri Quartet, and with Harvey Shapiro, a renowned cellist and teacher at The Juilliard School. After completing his studies, Hardy began his professional career as a cellist. He joined the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., in 1978 and became the principal cellist in 1985. He held this position for 28 years, during which time he performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists. In addition to his work with the National Symphony Orchestra, Hardy has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He has appeared with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also performed at major music festivals, such as the Marlboro Music Festival and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Hardy has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1982, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which launched his solo career. He has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the National Symphony Orchestra's John Barry Memorial Award, and the Mayor's Arts Award in Washington, D.C. In addition to his performing career, Hardy is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught at The Juilliard School, the Peabody Conservatory, and the University of Maryland, where he is currently a professor of cello. He has also taught at many summer music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center. Hardy is known for his beautiful tone and expressive playing, as well as his dedication to the music of our time. He has premiered many new works for the cello, including pieces by composers such as John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Christopher Rouse. He is also a champion of the music of African-American composers and has performed and recorded works by William Grant Still, George Walker, and others. Throughout his career, Hardy has remained committed to the art of music-making and to sharing his love of music with others. He has inspired countless young musicians through his teaching and performances, and his contributions to the world of classical music will continue to be felt for many years to come.More....
