He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Hans showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Hans Lang's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he began formal training at the Vienna Conservatory when he was just six years old. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Austria, including Franz Schmidt and Alfred Uhl. Hans was a prodigious student, and he quickly excelled in his studies, mastering the piano, violin, and cello. In 1963, Hans Lang made his debut as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major. The performance was a resounding success, and Hans was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. He went on to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Hans Lang's repertoire was vast and varied, and he was equally at home performing the works of classical masters like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, as well as contemporary composers like Stravinsky, Bartok, and Shostakovich. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Chopin, and his performances of Chopin's piano concertos were considered some of the finest ever recorded. In 1972, he was awarded the prestigious Mozart Medal by the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria. In 1985, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a civilian in Germany. Despite his many achievements, Hans Lang remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He was known for his tireless work ethic and his unwavering commitment to excellence. He continued to perform and record well into his seventies, and his recordings remain some of the most beloved and revered in the classical music canon. Hans Lang passed away on December 12, 2018, at the age of 73.
