Tony Martin was an American singer and actor who was born on December 25, 1913, in San Francisco, California. He was the youngest of ten children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Martin began singing at a young age and was soon performing in local clubs and theaters. In 1932, Martin moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He began performing on radio shows and soon caught the attention of movie producers. In 1936, he made his film debut in the movie "Sing, Baby, Sing." He quickly became a popular leading man in musicals and appeared in over 30 films throughout his career. Martin's smooth baritone voice and good looks made him a popular recording artist as well. He recorded over 300 songs, including hits like "Begin the Beguine," "I Get Ideas," and "There's No Tomorrow." He also had a successful career on Broadway, appearing in shows like "Ziegfeld Follies" and "Top Banana." One of Martin's most memorable performances was in the 1948 film "Casbah," in which he sang the song "For Every Man There's a Woman." The song became a hit and earned Martin an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Martin continued to perform throughout the 1950s and 1960s, appearing on television shows like "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Dean Martin Show." He also continued to record music, releasing albums like "Tony Martin Sings" and "I Get Ideas." In 1970, Martin retired from performing and moved to Beverly Hills with his wife, dancer and actress Cyd Charisse. However, he continued to make occasional appearances on television and in films, including a cameo in the 1985 movie "That's Dancing!" Throughout his career, Martin received numerous awards and honors. In 1944, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was also inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1989. In 2006, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Singers. Tony Martin passed away on July 27, 2012, at the age of 98. He was remembered as a talented and versatile performer who left a lasting impact on the world of music and film.
