Jiri grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He showed great talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Jiri studied at the Prague Conservatory and later at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He was a student of the renowned Czech composer Alois Hába, who was known for his microtonal music. Jiri was greatly influenced by Hába's teachings and incorporated microtonal elements into his own compositions. In 1948, Jiri Hurník made his debut as a pianist with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition as a virtuoso pianist and performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Jiri Hurník was also a prolific composer and wrote over 200 works, including operas, ballets, symphonies, chamber music, and solo piano pieces. His music was characterized by its use of microtonality, rhythmic complexity, and folk elements. One of Jiri Hurník's most famous works is his opera "The Little Mermaid," which premiered in 1978 at the National Theatre in Prague. The opera was based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and was praised for its imaginative orchestration and lyrical melodies. It has since become a staple of the Czech opera repertoire. Jiri Hurník received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1964, he was awarded the State Prize for his composition "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra."
