Period:RomanticGenre:OperaJuan Oncina was a Spanish tenor who was born on September 25, 1920, in Valencia, Spain. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Oncina began his musical training at a young age and showed a natural talent for singing. He studied at the Valencia Conservatory and later at the Madrid Conservatory. Oncina made his professional debut in 1943 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, where he sang the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and expressive performances. In 1945, he made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, where he sang the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La traviata. Oncina's career took off in the 1950s, when he began performing in major opera houses throughout Europe and the United States. He sang at the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, among others. He was particularly renowned for his performances in the operas of Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini. One of Oncina's most memorable performances was in the 1957 production of Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival. He sang the role of Don Ottavio and received critical acclaim for his performance. The production was later released on DVD and is considered a classic of the operatic repertoire. Oncina also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1955, he was awarded the Medal of Fine Arts by the Spanish government. He was also a recipient of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, one of Spain's highest honors. In 1960, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Valencia, his hometown. Despite his success, Oncina remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He was known for his professionalism and his commitment to his roles. He continued to perform well into his seventies, and his final performance was in 1993, when he sang the role of the Emperor Altoum in Puccini's Turandot at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Juan Oncina passed away on December 25, 1995, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest tenors of his generation.
