Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique, also known as the Radio-Canada Symphony Orchestra, is a Canadian classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 80 years. The orchestra was founded in 1939 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Canada. The founding of the Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique was a result of the CBC's desire to promote Canadian music and culture. The CBC recognized the importance of classical music in Canadian society and wanted to create an orchestra that would showcase the talents of Canadian musicians. The orchestra's first conductor was Jean-Marie Beaudet, a French-Canadian conductor who had previously worked with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, the Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique has had many talented musicians and conductors. Some of the most notable conductors include Wilfrid Pelletier, who conducted the orchestra from 1940 to 1951, and Zubin Mehta, who conducted the orchestra in 1965. The orchestra has also had many talented musicians, including cellist Ofra Harnoy and pianist Angela Hewitt. The Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique has performed many notable works over the years, including Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The orchestra has also performed many works by Canadian composers, including Harry Somers, R. Murray Schafer, and Claude Vivier. One of the highlights of the Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique's history was its performance at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. The orchestra performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, showcasing Canadian music and culture to the world. The orchestra also performed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, further cementing its reputation as one of Canada's premier orchestras. The Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique has won many awards over the years, including the Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year in 1991 and 1992. The orchestra has also been nominated for several other Juno Awards, as well as the Prix Opus and the Canadian Music Centre's Harry Freedman Recording Award. In addition to its performances, the Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique has also been involved in music education. The orchestra has worked with many schools and community organizations to promote classical music and provide opportunities for young musicians. The orchestra has also hosted many masterclasses and workshops, allowing aspiring musicians to learn from some of the best musicians in Canada. Today, the Orchestre Radio-Canada Musique continues to be one of Canada's premier orchestras. The orchestra performs regularly at the Maison symphonique de Montréal and has a loyal following of fans across Canada. The orchestra's commitment to promoting Canadian music and culture has made it an important part of Canada's cultural landscape, and its legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and music lovers.
