Role:ComposerPeriod:ModernGenre:OrchestralMike D'Abo is a British singer, songwriter, and pianist who is best known for his work as the lead vocalist of the 1960s pop group Manfred Mann. Born on March 1, 1944, in Betchworth, Surrey, England, D'Abo grew up in a musical family. His father, Paul D'Abo, was a jazz pianist, and his mother, Joan, was a singer. D'Abo began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. D'Abo's musical career began in the early 1960s when he joined the band A Band of Angels as a keyboardist and vocalist. The band released a few singles, but they failed to gain much success. In 1966, D'Abo was approached by Manfred Mann, who was looking for a new lead vocalist after the departure of Paul Jones. D'Abo auditioned for the band and was hired on the spot. With D'Abo as their new lead vocalist, Manfred Mann went on to achieve great success. Their first single with D'Abo, "Just Like a Woman," reached number 10 on the UK charts. They followed this up with a string of hits, including "Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James," "Ha! Ha! Said the Clown," and "Mighty Quinn," which reached number one in the UK and number 10 in the US. D'Abo's tenure with Manfred Mann lasted until 1969, when he left the band to pursue a solo career. He released his first solo album, "D'Abo," in 1970, which featured a mix of original songs and covers. The album received positive reviews but failed to make much of an impact commercially. In the 1970s, D'Abo continued to release solo albums and also worked as a songwriter for other artists. He wrote songs for artists such as Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, and Kiki Dee. One of his most successful songs was "Handbags and Gladrags," which was covered by Rod Stewart and became a hit in the UK. In the 1980s, D'Abo began to focus more on his work as a composer and arranger for film and television. He composed music for a number of British TV shows, including "The Bill" and "Peak Practice." He also worked on the score for the film "The Care Bears Movie." In the 1990s, D'Abo returned to performing and released a new solo album, "Indestructible," in 1995. The album featured a mix of original songs and covers and received positive reviews. D'Abo also began performing with a new version of Manfred Mann, which featured original members Tom McGuinness and Mike Hugg. In 2004, D'Abo was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Manfred Mann. He continues to perform and record music to this day, and his contributions to the world of music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. Throughout his career, D'Abo has been praised for his distinctive voice and his ability to write catchy, memorable songs. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of film and television music. His legacy as a musician and composer continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans alike.More....
