He was born on January 1, 1950, in London, England. From a young age, Richardson showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Richardson's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied piano and composition. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where he honed his skills as a pianist. During his time at Juilliard, Richardson was mentored by some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein. After completing his studies, Richardson embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and musicality, and he was soon in demand as a soloist with orchestras around the world. Some of his most notable performances include his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1975, his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the New York Philharmonic in 1982, and his performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1990. Throughout his career, Richardson received numerous awards and accolades for his musical achievements. In 1985, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1992 for his services to music. In addition to his work as a concert pianist, Richardson was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Juilliard School in New York, where he inspired and influenced a new generation of musicians. Sadly, Richardson's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 1995. Despite his illness, he continued to perform and teach until his death in 1998 at the age of 48. Richardson's legacy lives on through his recordings and the many musicians he inspired and influenced throughout his career.
