Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their stunning performances for over 40 years. The ensemble was founded in 1977 by Barbara Thornton, a renowned musicologist and performer, who had a vision of creating an all-female vocal ensemble that would specialize in medieval and early music. Barbara Thornton was born in New York City in 1950 and grew up in a family of musicians. She studied musicology at Columbia University and later pursued a career as a performer, specializing in medieval and early music. In 1977, she founded Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble, which quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances and innovative programming. The ensemble's main members have changed over the years, but its core has always been a group of talented and dedicated female vocalists. Some of the most notable members of the ensemble include Anne Azéma, who joined the group in 1988 and has been its artistic director since 1998, and Margriet Tindemans, a renowned viola da gamba player who has collaborated with the ensemble on numerous occasions. Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble has performed all over the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble's career was their performance at the 1989 Salzburg Festival, where they performed a program of medieval music to critical acclaim. The ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including a Grammy nomination for their recording of Hildegard von Bingen's music in 1998. Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble has also been at the forefront of promoting the music of female composers throughout history. The ensemble has recorded several albums featuring the music of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century composer and mystic, and has also performed works by other female composers such as Kassia and Beatriz de Dia. In addition to their performances and recordings, Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble has also been involved in educational outreach programs, working with schools and universities to promote the study and appreciation of medieval and early music. The ensemble has also conducted workshops and masterclasses for aspiring vocalists and musicians. Despite the passing of Barbara Thornton in 1998, Sequentia Women's Vocal Ensemble has continued to thrive and evolve under the leadership of Anne Azéma. The ensemble's commitment to excellence and innovation has made it one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world.
